The Fable 5 Rollercoaster — Blocked, Then I Thought It Was Over, Then Extended

July 15, 20265 min read

The month since I started using Anthropic's Fable 5 has been a rollercoaster.

Suddenly blocked, then reopened, then a shift to pay-per-use pushed me to use it like crazy right up to the last day, then I thought it was over — and then it got extended. I'm logging the whole thing in chronological order. (This was originally three separate posts, now merged into one.)

Part 1 — I Tried It, Then Got Blocked (June 16)

Last week, Anthropic's Claude Code shipped a new model: Fable 5 Mythos.

I tried it, and it was clearly different. Where earlier models focused on just writing the code, Fable 5 felt like a step up in explanation quality. It did a much better job explaining "why" it was doing something a certain way.

So I made another account to try it out — and suddenly I got blocked.

What Happened

The US government asked Anthropic to cut off Fable 5 access for foreign employees and overseas users, and Anthropic complied.

Whether it's a national security issue or an export-control matter, the exact reason wasn't disclosed. Either way, the outcome is simple: no access outside the US.

The Platform Lock-in Problem

Watching this unfold, I keep coming back to one thought.

We didn't see it coming when Windows became a monopoly. Same with the iPhone taking over the smartphone ecosystem. We only realized "this is a problem" once the monopoly was already complete — and by then, there were no alternatives left.

AI seems likely to follow the same path if things keep going this way. I don't know yet whether it'll be OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic. But once any single player locks in a monopoly, pricing and access terms become entirely theirs to decide.

"Overseas service suspended at the request of the US government" — like what just happened with Fable 5 — could become routine.

As for My Own Country

Honestly, it worries me.

Neither Kakao nor Naver seems to be seriously investing in their own AI. It looks like they've judged it's too late to catch up with ChatGPT or Anthropic, and that the return on investment just isn't there. Maybe that's a rational call.

But the consequence is that AI service pricing in my country ends up dictated entirely by global platforms. Without a real competitor, there's no pricing leverage either.

There's nothing I can do about it right now, but I can't shake the feeling that something needs to happen before this dynamic sets in for good.

Part 2 — My Last Day Using It (July 11)

Access came back after that, but this time word came that Fable 5 was switching to pay-per-use starting this coming Sunday.

So I've genuinely been using it like a maniac all week.

Good thing I still have three of those 7-day passes I got earlier.

I started out just rotating between my existing account and one new one, then suddenly all these games, platforms, and communities I'd wanted to build for ages came rushing back...

One thing led to another, and this week alone I built 2 new apps and 2 new platforms.

On top of that, one platform I'd already been working on is still in progress — stuck waiting on payment gateway approval...

Since the Fable 5 window felt too valuable to waste, I started one thing, then another... and now I'm juggling 4 accounts, moving between them whenever tokens run out, with separate login accounts set up per project. It's chaos.

But even this is nearly maxed out on Fable limits now... it's winding down.

I built everything I'd ever imagined... and now I need more imagination.

The limit of ability is imagination.

Part 3 — I Thought It Was Over, Then It Got Extended (July 15)

Anthropic suddenly extended it via email. Until July 19, 2026...

It was actually supposed to end on the 13th, so I figured this was it.

I was tidying up what I'd built... thinking I could finally sleep easy...

And then, out of nowhere, extended until Friday???

Ugh... now I have nothing left to build.

So I ended up building an entire education program too.

I just built the thing I wanted to study myself. Deep learning, machine learning, Kubernetes... a full hands-on lab app, all in one.

Watching Udemy courses wasn't holding my focus anyway. Might as well just build it and learn that way...

So I'm using up the remaining tokens on this and that. Writing a book too... running 4 accounts... and it's finally nearly maxed out.

I genuinely can't keep up anymore, it's too much.

A human just can't keep pace. 😭

Reminds me of that piece I read a while back — "Silicon Valley is exhausting"...

Epilogue

And in the end, even the extended deadline ran out. In the early hours of July 18, I went to work and found "Usage credits are required for this model" — Fable 5 had vanished entirely from my usage list. I wrote up that last chapter separately:

Fable 5 Is Finally Gone — Vanished at 3 AM

Riding this rollercoaster for a month, I built everything I possibly could — apps, platforms, even an education site. It's the first time I've ever been dragged around this hard by a single model, but it's also the most productive month I've ever had.
